AI and coding

What AI can really code.

How long a task the best AI can finish, what trials of real developers measured, what developers say, what each tool shipped last, and what goes wrong.

  • 16–20 hrssoftware task the best AI METR tested finishes half the time
  • 73%of developers use AI coding tools every day
  • 45%of tests where AI code had a security flaw
What it can finish

From minutes to days.

METR times software tasks by how long they take a skilled person, then finds the longest the best AI finishes half the time. The blue line is the best measured so far.

METR's public data runs from March 2023 to February 2026. Since then its tests have run out of room, in its own words below.

“the 50% time horizon point estimate of the most capable shared model was between 16 and 20 hours”

METR, Frontier risk report, May 19, 2026

“The most capable agents we evaluated essentially saturated our Time Horizon 1.1 benchmark”

METR, Frontier risk report, May 19, 2026

“Measurements above 16 hrs are unreliable with our current task suite”

METR, Time horizons, Sep 8, 2026

Studies of real developers

Does it make developers faster?

Trials that gave some developers AI and not others. The answers differ by who was tested, on what, and with which tools, and the studies run by companies that make the tools report the biggest gains.

+20%

how much faster experienced developers believed AI made them

−19%

what was measured: they took 19% longer with AI

METR now calls these 2025 results out of date. Its 2026 follow-up points to a speedup but, in its words, gives “an unreliable signal”. METR, 2025, Jul 10, 2025 · METR, Feb 2026, Feb 24, 2026

randomized trial follow-up

18%faster in METR's newer estimate, which it calls an unreliable signal

METR

“an unreliable signal of the current productivity effect of AI tools”
  • “developers choosing not to participate in the study because they do not wish to work without AI”
  • “developers are more sped up from AI tools now”
  • “only very weak evidence for the size of this increase”

Original developers, later study: “we now estimate a speedup of -18%”

METR writes the result with the same sign as in 2025, where +19% meant slower, so −18% means faster. Its range runs from 38% faster to 9% slower.

randomized controlled trial

19%longer to finish real tasks with AI, for experienced developers in early 2025

METR

“When developers are allowed to use AI tools, they take 19% longer to complete issues”
  • “expected AI to speed them up by 24%”
  • “they still believed AI had sped them up by 20%”

Early-2025 AI tools, in the developers' own code.

What developers say

Everyone uses it. Trust lags.

The largest surveys of developers. Use has become near universal; trust in what AI writes lags behind.

73%

of developers use coding assistants and agents every day

“The overwhelming majority of respondents now use coding assistants and agents daily (73%).”

Stack Overflow Developer Survey 2026, 2026

46%

of developers distrusted the accuracy of AI tools in 2025, against 33% who trusted it

“More developers actively distrust the accuracy of AI tools (46%) than trust it (33%).”

Stack Overflow Developer Survey 2025, 2025

30%

of tech workers have little or no trust in the code AI writes, though 90% use AI at work

“30% report little or no trust in the code generated by AI, a slightly lower percentage than last year but a key trend to note.”

The track record

What goes wrong.

Security flaws in AI-written code, made-up software packages attackers can exploit, and a coding tool that shipped malicious code.

studyCompany-reported

45%of tests where AI-written code had a risky security flaw

Veracode, GenAI Code Security Report (October 2025 update)

“AI-generated code introduced risky security flaws in 45% of tests.”

Code from "over 100 large language models" across Java, JavaScript, Python and C#.

  • “Larger, newer AI models didn't improve security.”

Veracode sells code-security tools.

study

5.2%of software packages suggested by commercial AI models don't exist (21.7% for open models)

Spracklen et al., USENIX Security 2025

“the average percentage of hallucinated packages is at least 5.2% for commercial models and 21.7% for open-source models”

Code models suggesting software packages that do not exist, which attackers can register.

  • “including a staggering 205,474 unique examples of hallucinated package names”

Attackers can publish a package under a made-up name, so a developer who installs it gets their code.
