How close is Super?

What named people predicted about AGI and superintelligence, word for word and dated, set against what independent tests measured and what forecasters expect. We don't add a guess of our own.

Said against measured

The claims, and the line.

Apricot capsules are what named people said, at the years they named. The blue line is the length of software task the best AI finishes half the time, timed by how long it takes a skilled person (METR).

METR's public data runs from March 2023 to February 2026. Since then it says Measurements above 16 hrs are unreliable with our current task suite. In May it said the most capable agents it tested had essentially saturated its tests, and its page now says it is no longer actively updated. The line stops where the measurements stop.

Every quote was read at its source. Where a person gave a span such as “three to five years”, the years shown are our arithmetic from the day they said it, and the card says so.

Herbert A. Simon

AI pioneer, Carnegie Mellon University · said 1965

About: machines doing any human work

“machines will be capable, within twenty years, of doing any work that a man can do.”

When: 1985

What happened

1985 passed without machines able to do any work a person can do. A survey of AI researchers published in 2024 put a 50% chance of unaided machines outperforming humans at every task at 2047 (Grace et al.).

“I think it's probably next year, within two years.”

When: 2025, within two years (2026)

What happened

2025 passed without a generally accepted AGI. In Jan 2026 Musk moved the date: “I think we might have AI that is smarter than any human by the end of this year.”. The Metaculus community forecast for a general AI system, read on 2026-10-19, is 14 Feb 2031.

About: AI agents in the workforce

“We believe that, in 2025, we may see the first AI agents “join the workforce” and materially change the output of companies.”

When: 2025

What happened

2025 has passed. In June 2025 Altman wrote, in “The Gentle Singularity”, that “2025 has seen the arrival of agents that can do real cognitive work; writing computer code will never be the same.” That is his own assessment. As a measured check, the Remote Labor Index paper (arXiv, 30 Oct 2025) found “the highest-performing agent achieving an automation rate of 2.5%” on real freelance projects.

About: share of code written by AI

“we are not far from the world—I think we'll be there in three to six months—where AI is writing 90 percent of the code.”

Also said: “And then in twelve months, we may be in a world where AI is writing essentially all of the code.”

What happened

We haven't found an independent, dated measure of how much of all code AI writes, so we can't say yet whether this came true.

About: automated AI researcher (and an automated AI research intern by Sept 2026)

“Our goal is by March 2028 to have a true automated AI researcher and define what that means”

When: 2028-03 (researcher); 2026-09 (intern)

What happened

On 6 Sept 2026 OpenAI wrote: “we have now reached the goal, announced last fall, of having an automated research intern by September of this year.” It defines a research intern as “a system that can carry out well-defined research tasks under human direction, including tasks that would take a skilled researcher a few days.” This is company-reported and not independently measured. On the 2028 goal it says it is “making strong progress”.

  • The current FrontierMath record scores. Epoch shows them only in interactive charts our tools couldn't read.

  • The release dates of the newest models (GPT-6 Astra, Claude Fable 5.1, Claude Opus 5.5, GPT-5.6 Sol, Kimi K3), which the pages we read don't give.
  • Whether every score on Scale's Humanity's Last Exam leaderboard uses the same fixed set of 2,500 questions.
